Sunny Leone agrees she has many regrets in her life but what she showed in Karenjit Kaur was the truth.
Sunny Leone recently unveiled Karenjit Kaur, a biopic based on her life. While the show on ZEE5 received mixed reviews upon release, Sunny says it was indeed a difficult process for her to lay bare her life’s story for people to watch and judge.
In an interview to Mid-Day, Sunny said she was being truthful in her portrayal. “It was beyond difficult to shoot this series…I know my story and the choices I made, but I was not mentally aware of how it affected my family and the other people in my life. I think, that realisation hurt,” she said.
Sunny was born Karenjir Kaur and she spent her childhood with her parents and brother in Canada. After featuring in adult magazines, Sunny became a popular porn star. She came to India as a contestant on Bigg Boss and later joined Bollywood with movies like Jism 2 and Ragini MMS 2.
Sunny says the hardest part was to relive the death of her parents. Her mother died in 2008 while her father died of cancer in 2010. “I am aware that they (actors Grusha Kapoor and Bijay Anand, who play her parents) are not my real parents, but the feelings and situation were real. Seeing my on-screen father suffering from cancer, and my mother in a coffin, was not easy to relive. The heartache was not cathartic. While it was my choice to go through this all over again, I assumed that I was ready for it, but I was not,” she added.
The show has also been criticised for trying to build a better public image for Sunny by projecting her as something she was not. To this, Sunny says she has only shared her truth with the world and wanted to show everyone she is just like them.
Sunny also accepted her love for money and a luxurious life. She says she was always taught the value of money by her parents and this is why she is businesswoman first. She now has the added responsibility of providing for her three kids and is therefore not apologetic for ‘liking money as much as the next person.’
However, she also accepts that she has made ‘too many’ mistakes in her life.
